EAS-Conference 2010:
"Music and Music Education within the Context of Socio-Cultural Changes"
Cultural environment is constantly subject to changes and developments influenced by various and numerous dynamic conditions. Evolving socio-cultural environment, as in the other fields of life, is reformulating the musical culture affecting musical life in societies and musical relationships of individuals in different angles. Therefore, socio-cultural change is still a fact to be confronted by music educators and researchers as in the past that has triggered the underlying idea of the congress. Hence, the EAS 2010 Congress in Bolu, Turkey in general is expected to host discussions on the topics to illustrate particularly, migration / labor migration; social changes, cultural imperialism, multiculturalism, mass media, popular trends, globalization, asylum regarding music. The sub-topics of the congress are given below.
The Effect of Socio-Cultural Changes on the Musical Life in Society
New trends in musical life and culture of society; effects on the classical and popular music types and kinds; influence on the musical creativity and ways of performance; migration as a compelling social fact and its musical consequences; content and scope of "World Music", "Ethno Music" or "Migration Music" concepts; reactions of musical institutions to socio-cultural changes; role of music in providing the needs these changes led to; function of music in dealing with psychic, social or political issues with respect to socio-cultural context.
Socio-Cultural Changes and Musical Identity
Music as an indicator of identity; musical symbols of social, religious, linguistic etc. identities; feeling of social affinity and musical identity; musical identity in the multicultural societies where numerous cultures and subcultures coexist or are integrated; music in identifying the self and the other; role of music in the formation, merging and separation of various social groups; factors such as migration, mass media etc. and musical identity breakdowns; role of music education in the process of musical identity formation.
New Perspectives in Music Education within the Context of Socio-Cultural Changes
Challenges of expanded musical experience fields on the music education; reactions of music educators to evolving socio-cultural conditions; adaptation of music education institutions to the socio-cultural change process and emergence of institutional constructions; new music education concepts and methods in response to the evolving and enriching musical-cultural conditions; suggested music course models and their argumentations; required educational-political arrangements to offer new music education regulations to all students; place and function of new musical kinds in the education for non-professional musicians.

Requirements and needs for educating versatile music instructors to provide the demands of socio-cultural developments and diversity; general vision of music teacher training institutions in this context; differences and similarities in music teacher training systems of various countries; new musical perspectives, trends and their traces in the music teacher training programs; in-service training of music instructors for the adaptation to socio-cultural changes.
Interdisciplinary Studies on Socio-Cultural Changes, Music and Music Education Relations
Roles and significance of interdisciplinary studies; place of interdisciplinary studies in relation to society, music and music education along with current trends; contribution of theories, methods and repertoire of several disciplines while suggesting new decisions on musical life in society and music education; cooperating with other disciplines such as Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, Ethnology, Educational Sciences and Political Sciences.
