LUCA - Campus Lemmensinstituut
The Lemmensinstituut has built up a tradition of music education for more than 130 years. It was founded in 1879 by Jaak-Nikolaas Lemmens and was originally an institute for church music. Several decades ago the institute developed into a complete conservatory, which offers training in all possible disciplines: composition, conducting, instrument/singing, jazz, music pedagogy, music therapy and dramatic arts. The school has a modern infrastructure. Several concert halls, big and small auditoriums, classrooms, music playing rooms and music study rooms are available, offering a large number of organs and pianos - also for indispensable individual study.
Choir singing has always taken a central position in the educational format of the Lemmensinstituut, on purpose, in order to follow the tracks of the most ancient honourable European musical and music pedagogical traditions. All students join in working on the performance of vocal and instrumental masterpieces in projects spread all over the academic year. Thus for many years a tradition of performing Bach's passions has been built up. The development of the instrumental sections triggered the widening from ‘making music together’ to ensemble, as well in chamber music contexts as in the big symphonic and band orchestras.
