"Music Teachers for the Future"

EAS is an organisation which works to provide a forum for music educators and researchers to share their professional knowledge and experience. We are committed to developing and improving the education of young people in music and the education and training of their music teachers. We aim to offer support and opportunities for professional development for music educators across Europe.

Music education students from more then 10 European countries will be invited to participate in working together to debate and develop ideas in practical and creative ways for a final presentation to the delegates of the main conference on the morning of the 28th September.

Aims

The Forum aims to provide students with opportunities for sharing knowledge and experience of the education and training provided in music teacher education programmes across Europe. The EAS-student forum 2006 is motivated by several aims:

1. The need to develop music education for young people which is challenging, transforming and engaging.

2. The need to develop the professional knowledge of future teachers in ways that support critical reflection, peer learning and creative thinking.

3. The importance of cultural, professional and social understanding to facilitate exchange, flexibility and mobility.

1 a) What should be the aims of a 21st Century curriculum for music?

b) How should these aims be achieved?

2 a) In what ways does the curriculum you are trained to teach offer a good

foundation for a 21st Century music education for young people?

b) How should music teacher education be improved?

3. What do you hope you can achieve as music educators?

4. What do you hope to change as music educators?

Outcomes

A presentation will be made to the EAS conference 2006 on the morning of Thursday, 28th of September, to communicate the outcomes of the students’ activities. A report will also be posted on the EAS website and will contribute to future work of the association.
