Short biography


Sidsel Karlsen is Professor of Music Education at Hedmark University College in Norway and Adjunct Professor at the Sibelius Academy in Finland. She received her PhD in Music Education at LuleƄ University of Technology in Sweden in 2007. Prior work experiences include freelancing as a classical singer, working as a community musician and as a festival administrator. Professor Karlsen has published in Scandinavian as well as international research journals, such as the International Journal of Music Education, the British Journal of Music Education, the Music Education Research and the International Journal of Community Music. She is also a contributor to international anthologies such as Exploring social justice: How music education might matter and Sociology and music education as well as the recent Learning, teaching, and musical identity: Voices across cultures. For the period of 2009-2011 she conducted research, funded by the Academy of Finland, on multicultural music education in the Nordic countries. Her main research interests include exploring music-related learning in informal contexts as well as music education in multicultural societies.
